The challenge

The risk of death imposed by a cruise ship in case of catastrophe was brought to public notice with the wreckage of the Costa Concordia in 2012, when all on board rescue systems had failed. The overturn of the ship revealed a dramatic lack of space when thousands of passengers sought to climb the lifeboats. How can a disaster like this be avoided in the future?

The invention

The RES-Sea Rescue System provides two strategies: Telescopic safety balconies are extended to provide a rescue space for the passengers which allows them an organized transfer to the lifeboats. The bottom side of these balconies act as a counterfort for inflatable balloons forming a swim belt surrounding the hull in case of damage.
